Located in the centre of The English Riviera, with views to Torquay on one side, and views to Brixham in the other direction, Preston Sands offers a family-friendly, safe sandy beach and good facilities. The beach is in Preston which is part of Paignton just north the town centre. It is the home to Oldway Mansion and gardens, and a number of shops which are within a 5 minute walk of the seafront.
On a sunny day, the beach is an attractive place to be, with the views across the bay and the car-free promenade lined with colourful beach huts. Behind the beach huts, there is a green which separates the road from the beach. Here there is ample room for picnics and a fenced children’s play area.
There are also public toilets and 2 beach kiosks both selling hot and cold drinks, ice-cream, beach goods and snacks. On a sunny summer’s day they both get busy so be prepared to queue. The beach has a lifeguard during the summer where deckchair is also available.
Access to the beach
The road which runs parallel to the beach, behind the green has a limited number of on-road spaces which are limited to 3 hours maximum stay in the summer. The area is primarily residential so there is free on-road parking in the area if you are able to walk to a short distance. Paignton town centre is around a 10 minute walk away along the seafront.
Access is level onto the beach, so if you are staying nearby, or find a parking space, Preston Sands is ideal for those with beach goods or a picnics to carry, and and for pushchairs and those with limited mobility.
On the Beach
Preston Sands is a sandy beach, so ideal for sandcastle making and plodging in the sea. When the tide is in, the amount of available beach reduces to a relatively narrow strip, but it still possible to find a space.
