Entertainment, Events and Activities in Dartmouth

The town of Dartmouth hosts a number of excellent events throughout the year which attract visitors from near and afar.  When the major events, some of which are detailed below, take place, access into Dartmouth can be tricky by car so it’s best to allow extra travel time or use the park and ride services provided.

Dartmouth Events

The Dartmouth Royal Regatta is the most popular event of the year held in late August.  This attracts thousands of people into Dartmouth for the air displays as well as sailing and rowing races.  While the centre of town is taken over with stands and entertainment, the action happens on the water where Dartmouth Rowing Club and Dartmouth Yacht Club organise races with hundreds of boats of all sizes taking part.  The air display takes place over 3 or 4 nights of the regatta with demonstrations by RAF and Royal Navy aeroplanes and helicopters, a parachute display and the Red Arrows who use the hills around Dartmouth and the river to perform an exhilarating display.  The regatta is rounded off with fireworks on the final night.

With a number of noted restaurants in the town including the Carved Angel and The Seahorse, it’s no surprise that Dartmouth is home to a food festival held in late October with demonstrations and local produce for sale in the Market Square to evenings with noted chefs and cookery competitions.

In December, Candlelit Dartmouth takes place in the lead up to Christmas.  Once again the centre is transformed with stalls, children’s entertainment and live music on the bandstand – the perfect opportunity to do some Christmas shopping.

Entertainment in Dartmouth

Dartmouth has a small theatre – the Flavel which puts on a wide range of performances throughout the year, so it’s worth checking out their upcoming shows when you are in the area.

Activities in Dartmouth

For the more active, there is a leisure centre at the top of Dartmouth though this has a sports hall and gym, but no indoor pool.  For swimming, catch the ferry over to The English Riviera where Paignton and Torquay have larger facilities with indoor pools.

Dartmouth Golf Club, a few miles inland offers two courses, both designed to USPGA standards and set out to enjoy the surrounding countryside.  The club also now offers hotel and self catering accommodation, a health and leisure centre and bar and bistro.
