- One road in and out of Brixham
- Plentiful parking except in the very height of summer
- Lots of visitor attractions in the area
- Try the ferrys to Torquay and Dartmouth and leave the car behind
With one main road in and out of Brixham, getting there can be a long journey at certain times of the year. Yet it’s position at ‘the end of the road’ can also be seen as a plus point for those looking for a getting away from it all holiday.
Traveling by car, it takes around 2 hours to reach Brixham from the M5 at Bristol, though Newton Abbot, where the dual carriageway ends, can be busy during rush hours and weekends. The nearest train station is Paignton, 5 miles away, and there is a bus every 10 minutes for the final leg of the journey.
In Brixham itself, parking as available around the centre and is only ever a problem at peak times of the summer. The main car park is in the centre of the town and ideal for the shops and harbour. At busy times, there are also car parks to either side of the harbour, at Fishcombe and the Breakwater, both of which are worth seeking out, as they are a pleasant walk along the water’s edge back to the inner harbour and shops.
As much of Brixham was built on the sides of the harbour before the use of cars became widespread, there are many narrow lanes to negotiate depending on where you are staying so watch those wing mirrors!
From Brixham, exploring the area by car may sound slow going on Devon’s roads. However there are many attractions within an hour’s drive from National Trust sites to family fun parks and zoos. As with most of Devon and Cornwall, it’s best to stay relatively local and enjoy the wide variety of experiences on offer.
One final tip; if you are holidaying in Brixham, the best trip is on one of the ferries from the harbour where a day in Torquay or Dartmouth can be enjoyed in relaxing surroundings with great views from the water.
