Brixham beaches – Fishcombe Cove

  • A quiet beach in a picturesque setting.
  • Accessed down a steep path.
  • A seasonal cafe.

Fishcombe Cove is a small quiet, beach on the outskirts of Brixham flanked by the red cliffs of this undulating part of the coastline. This creates a pretty vista looking out over the bay to Torquay. It is around a 20 minute walk from Brixham centre and harbour which in itself is a scenic stroll alongside the outer habour past the fishing port and then up through Battery Gardens and then down to the beach.
Fishcombe Cove

At the top of the path leading down to Fishcombe Cove, there is a small heritage museum with a display of military memorabilia commemorating the Battery Gardens previous use as defences in World War 2. It’s free to go in though a voluntary donation would be appreciated. Next to the museum is Fishcombe Holiday Park with chalets and a bar which is open to non-residents serving food. They have great views over the bay and is the ideal place to grab some refreshments after the walk up from the beach. Also on the beach is a small cafe serving hot and cold drinks and food, and public toilets, both of which are only open in the summer.

Access to the beach

There is limited free parking above Battery Gardens and on-street parking in the area, from where you can walk down to the beach. The path descending down to the beach is straight and wide (for access vehicles only) so it is possible to take a buggy down. Coming back up is a different matter though; it is steep and a long haul, so carrying beach equipment will be hard. As a beach it is not for those with limited mobility, who may prefer to visit the Breakwater Beach on the other side of the Brixham harbour.

The Beach

Fishcombe Cove is stone and shingle and bathing is safe due to the protected cove. Just watch out for boats mooring just off the beach and the occasional visits of a local seal who lives in the area.

In summary its a picturesque beach surrounded by woodland and undulating coastline. It’s quiet due to the steep walk down to the beach but worth the effort if you ware looking for peace.
